my instrument cluster was eventually replaced and the problem has not returned. The error code was from the "vehicle speed sensor". It sounds like there are definitely several other vehicles out there with the problem. In the past the gauges seemed to fail more in hot weather.
You know when you start the car all the lights on the dash come on for a lamp test. sometimes the gauges just die, sometimes they freeze in place. There are some steps to narrow it down, but you'll have to search for them. One of these lights is "O/D OFF" light in the lower right. find this

and the odometer stops working for a few minutes (when i notice)... Best guess at this time is connectoritis on the back of the cluster. Odometer Not Working Ford F150 I've avoided using cruise, but now it doesn't seem to matter -the problem occurs anyway. Since that gauge are basically the same you could try getting a cluster similar to your model year and then swap in only the speedometer. It might be worse when the car is hot but I have not proved that.

The speed sensor is a 2-wire speed sensor, with both wires going into the speedometer.
They eventually came back but have been going on and off now for the last couple of months. Thank you for any help or suggestions. We use data about you for a number of purposes explained in the links below. Most of this is copied from another post that I made last week.
