Turned out to be loose casing. If you have only one key then either the car needs coding to accept the board frequency again or the board is malfunctioning. I can't really see how the battery issue would be related to the remote central locking, but I thought it was worth mentioning anyway. It was as if one of the keys had its code corrupted.

The red led on the key flashes constantly when the button is pressed ( as it should), but no joy.
